Behind the Scenes STORY This song was born after an unforgettable 93-kilometer backpacking trip along the Juan de Fuca Trail, a rugged and breathtaking stretch of British Columbia’s west coast. It was a journey that tested my endurance, resilience, and faith in ways I never anticipated. At the time, I wasn’t in peak condition—still recovering from car accident injuries—but I was determined to take on this challenge with my family. The struggle was worth every step because, along the way, I felt the Golden Thread speaking to me through the wild. From the very first day, the trail pushed us to our limits. Heavy packs, relentless rain, and miscalculated distances made that first 18 kilometers feel impossible. By nightfall, my husband’s back was wrecked from carrying 55 pounds. Fear crept in as we wondered if we’d have to quit before we even truly began. But we stopped, prayed, and found a way forward—redistributing weight, adjusting expectations, and trusting that we were meant to continue. As the days went on, the wilderness seemed to sing of its design, revealing the Golden Thread of Truth running through its DNA. The landscape mirrored life’s struggles and triumphs—steep climbs leading to breathtaking views, relentless storms followed by peaceful clearings, exhaustion met with renewal. I imagined shipwrecked sailors long ago, crawling along these shores in search of civilization. Every day, I had to push my body past its limits, tell my mind not to listen to my pain, and lean on my family for support. And somewhere in that struggle, something incredible happened—I became more in tune with my spirit, communing with this Golden Thread. There’s something about sacrifice and beauty crashing together, like waves against the shore. It creates a reaction so deep, so undeniable, that it changes you. That’s what this trip did for me. And that’s what Christ did for us—His sacrifice met with love, suffering met with redemption. From birth to life, all of creation reflects this pattern—rainstorms giving way to light, hardship leading to peace, and every struggle revealing a deeper beauty on the other side. On the trail, I felt this truth in every step in these ways: -Scaling near-vertical hillsides with ropes, then cresting a ridge where the trail meanders through the woods—a peaceful gift from nature. -Sunlight streaming through towering trees, the undergrowth glowing green, held still by birdsong and the distant crash of waves. -Struggling through days of rain-soaked trails as waves thrashed against the shore, trees swaying in the wind. Then, turning a corner, the sun would break through, revealing a vast ocean where whales passed by below. -The final push of the journey ends near a more populated beach, where a 30ft waterfall splashes carving a river into the sand. Its a favorite place to rinse off the struggle, to stand in cool, clean waters before stepping into the ocean. These moments stayed with me long after I left the trail, like echoes of something eternal. I had to try to capture them—to pour them into melody and lyrics, to bottle that feeling of being Swept Away. The way the waves, the wind, the towering forests all seemed to sing together—it felt like creation itself was carrying a song, one I could almost hear. In the production process, Philip Janz added a melodic bridge that birthed the song’s climax, perfectly capturing that moment of surrender to love’s current. It was such an integral piece that he became part of the songwriting credits. Then, in September, my dear Tennessee friends Rachel Durbin and Nathan Durbin brought their voices into the song. Rachel’s full, vibrant tone and Nathan’s rich, deep umber voice layered in harmonies that carried the spirit of the song even further. Their voices felt like an extension of the landscape itself—wild, powerful, and deeply moving. Last but definitely NOT least: tying it all together, Catherine Wilson’s antique violin added an epic, cinematic beauty to the song. Her sweet, simple melodies wove through the track like the Golden Thread itself—delicate yet strong, lifting the music to something timeless and untamed. That’s what Swept Away is about—being carried by Love, healed in its current, and joining the song of creation that has been singing since the beginning of time. Join me on this journey of hope and surrender—let's embrace the beauty and renewal that awaits us. Sign up for more and let’s keep the golden thread of faith moving forward together.
